This has to be one of the most messed up books I have ever read and I loved it. If you are looking for something completely and utterly twisted, look no further. Great to start a discussion on gender.

This was easily the weirdest book I've ever read and I loved every minute of it. I'd picked it up when I was considering writing an English paper on fluidity of gender in novels, which was a very bold move for me at the time. I'd read a few novels and short stories of Angela Carter's before and she was fast becoming my favourite author. This sounded wild enough for me to enjoy. Needless to say, I can see where a reader might be turned off by a story about a man kidnapped by rabid feminists who surgically turn him into a woman, but I admire Angela Carter's unapologetic way of writing about such huge taboos (and having written in the 1960s-1970s, this was very taboo back then) as if it's just an ordinary thing. This story was utterly insane in the best way possible. There were kidnappings, pirates, movie stars, drag queens, it had the whole shebang. I thoroughly enjoyed every mad twist and turn.

This book is bursting at the edges with things that I love: war, gothic eeriness, extreme feminism, body horror, biblical references, and some sort of bacchanal (read: chaos). The Passion of New Eve, the bastard child of Angela Carter’s books, is  the reason for her redemption and addition to my canon of literary greats. I understand it now. Angela Carter’s writing is romantic and feminine, and I personally think it has the greatest effect when she is writing about the deplorable.

It was well written, but at some points I got confused. I did like it, even though it was far different from what I had originally expected. It was shocking and it involved themes of abuse, rape, feminity. I would probably read it again at some point in the future in order to understand it more, but for now, it was simply okay to me.
