This book is a slow read, like any other non fiction. But it got really interesting at the end. I really enjoyed the author’s conclusion and suggestions. I realized that I really enjoy home economics studies in my adult life!

One part fascinating niche history and one part a reminder that snap judgements of people and professions may make for wit but it often misses the mark.

This is an incredibly important argument and probably the only book (at least the only one I've seen) that covers how the field came to be and the role it has played in society. For those reasons alone, it is a definite read in my mind.
The lower rating is just because Dreilinger's quest to be meaningfully comprehensive makes the book somewhat hard to get through. Dates, names, and organizations are constantly dropped on the reader with little help given to understand the weight of their importance to the forces that shape the industry. Because of this, it feels like there is so much more important content that needs to be argued for or against.
That all, I am very inspired as a reader to pick up that torch and see what I can do in my community, family, and career to better empower home ec as a necessity in society!
