I knew, as I was reading this book, that this book would become one of my favorites.

I can't do well with suicide-- my best friends and a friend of mine are struggling with depression and dark thoughts. So any mention of suicide gets me really sad. But this book didn't get me feeling this way, except for one explicit moment towards the middle. I guess the number of suicides is unrealistic, but it's exactly that point that made me love this book so much. There were so many beautiful and detailed descriptions, yet it still all felt like a dream to me.
All the scenes, all the thoughts are mixed up in my brain, and I get the sensation that this was all so real and so unreal, as if all lines were blurred, just like the line between life and death.

This review is making this sound like a very depressing book, but it isn't. It's beautifully written. There is so much voice. I loved every part of it. Although most of the characters are pitiful and weak, you can't help feeling attached to them. And I feel so warm inside thinking of the intense mental relationships all of these characters have for each other.

I can't even begin to correctly express how therapeutic of an effect this book is having on me. All I can say is that this book is wonderful.

"Again and again, I called out for Midori from the dead center of this place that was no place."

I had to read this for my World Literature class, and while reading a book that is assigned is always more boring than reading it for pleasure, but I still really enjoyed it-- I read most of it in one day, other than the first few chapters. There were many times that I thought a specific sentence or scenery description was beautiful, and my book is nice and highlighted.

Mi sono avvicinata a questo libro piena di aspettative, ma ho trovato un Murakami che non conoscevo. Avevo già un rapporto di odio e amore con lui, amo i suoi libri ma i loro finali mi lasciano sempre spiazzata. Pensando di ritrovare la stessa magia che questo autore riesce sempre a trasmettermi, mi sono schiantata invece contro un muro, che per un periodo ha anche arrestato la mia lettura di questo romanzo che, mi spiace, proprio non mi è piaciuto.

Deciso ad abbandonare per un po' i toni onirici e fantastici dei suoi libri precedenti, troviamo qui un Murakami che si cimenta in un'opera in perfetto stile romanzo di formazione dell'Ottocento europeo. Big mistake, a parer mio. Quello che mi è sempre piaciuto dei suoi romanzi era proprio quella nota irreale, quella decostruzione della realtà e la sua successiva interpretazione soggettiva e magica, e anche l'introspezione dei personaggi, il loro spessore, il loro smarrimento di fronte a qualcosa di nuovo e sconosciuto. Bene, in Norwegian Wood non ho trovato nulla di tutto questo.
Norwegian Wood è un romanzo d'amore, realistico, verosimile e, purtroppo, noiso. La vicenda non riesce ad acquistare lo spessore che dovrebbe, non coinvolge, non è accattivante. Mi sono ritrovata a leggere la vita di un ragazzo universitario raccontata come se fosse un lungo elenco di cose che gli accadono, che sono però cose normalissime e un po' noiose, anche perchè il protagonista stesso è un ragazzo noioso e annoiato dalla vita. Vive senza uno scopo vero e proprio, senza progetti, facendo quello che fa senza interesse e senza quasi accorgersene. Il grande conflitto interiore e la grande scelta che secondo l'introduzione di Amitrano egli si ritrova a dover compiere, io sinceramente non li ho trovati.
Naoko è una presenza-assenza, incomprensibile, troppo eterea ed evanescente, troppo accennata. I suoi comportamenti mi hanno spesso fatta innervosire, come anche quelli di Toru, che sembra accettare quello che gli accade intorno senza mai provare a cambiarlo o ad agire perchè succeda ciò che veramente vuole. Midori e Reiko sono i personaggi più interessanti dell'intero libro, sviluppati bene, ma non bastano a rendere accattivante il romanzo.

Unico pregio è lo stile di Murakami, che è comunque sempre molto scorrevole e liscio, semplice e godibile. Solo questo, insieme alla mia testardaggine, mi hanno aiutata a finire il romanzo, che avrei volentieri abbandonato a metà.
