The Blue Maiden

Two sisters are portrayed as wild all throughout their childhood with no real guidance at all. Their mother died during childbirth of her second daughter and the father is a pastor that doesn’t know how to handle being a single parent. It is set in an oppressive time period where women are to bear children and stay in their place. There is an air of religious oppression, as well.

This story has a dark and gloomy feel to it. It’s almost like I can feel the pain the character is internalizing but it left me confused. There is a plot twist in it that surprised me and caught my attention.

The narration was done by Alyssa Bresnahan. The narration was perfect. I’m giving the novel three stars because of the confusion and the questions due to the gaps in the story. I wanted to read this book because of the cover.

Special thanks to #NetGalley and #RBMedia for this #ARC to review.

I received this ARC as an audiobook through NetGalley on exchange for an honest review.

DNF. You know when you have wallpaper with a design or a wood beam ceiling, and it’s always there in the background not really calling any attention to itself, but when you’re laying in bed and can’t sleep your brain starts seeing faces and patterns and suddenly there’s a whole storyline unraveling, but when you finally do fall asleep you’ll forget all about it? That’s what listening to this book felt like. I had such a hard time paying attention due to the passive way in which it was written and I’m sad because it sounded so alluring from the description.

It reminded me of The Sun Walks Down, which I’m also struggling my way through and determined to finish only because I paid full price for it at sun airport bookshop.

I will be honest as much as I wanted to really like this book, It was just not a hit with me. I feel like I stopped and started it so many times and still could not connect with this story or the characters, it didn’t seem to be much like the summary and that was a bit disappointing. It could’ve keep my attention, so unfortunately I have to give it a 3 ⭐️‘s

Thank you to the Author and the Narrator for your hard work!

Thank you as well to RB Media and NetGalley for my no cost audiobook copy!

Beautifully written, this reads like a poem throughout. Many themes: family, sisterhood, nature, love, pregnancy, occult. Loved reading this; it was nice change to my usual reading.

Bruno Schulz, Shirley Jackson, and Terrence Malick trapped on a haunted Swedish island. Scary and sexy and sad, like life itself!

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me an ARC of this book for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

This was really not what I was expecting. The first few pages had me excited, and the description (which promised gothic vibes, witch hunts, children of the devil, critiquing the patriarchy, and discovering island secrets) caught my attention quickly.

Alas, I couldn't find most of that in this book. I just feel lied to I guess. The writing was pretty, but I left equal parts confused and bored. Disappointing.

A beautiful experience. The writing is a work of art. I loved the sisters and their bond as they grew. I loved the writing style.
