Magical realism, lovely and sparse. Twig is a sweet, lonely character and I loved her despite the speedy world building. Some aspects were too tidy for me, but I chalk that up more to being much much older than the intended audience. There is romance, and baking (oh, the pies!), herb gardens and tea, and so many beautiful Hoffman nature images and experiences. I liked the loneliness and connection, the small town gossip and support, and Twig's quirky magical journey. This is a 2017 Caudill nominee.

I really wanted to like this book. It would've been better had the story been drawn out and not so simplified.

I could not stop reading this fun, young adult book! From the author of “Practical Magic” is this coming-of-age, magical realism story about a family hiding from their enemy’s curse. Twig and her friends set out to break the 200-year-long spell to save her brother’s life. I savored every page in this fantastical world and enjoyed all of its characters. My heart feels so warm and full.

A sweet and fanciful children’s book about decades old family curses and boys who fly.

I read this book because it was next on the list for our class discussion.
I don't think I would teach this book in school, however, I would be recommending it to my students. I thought the narrative was wonderful and I think many students would enjoy it, but I am unsure if it would work within the curriculum. If it wasn't an issue, I would teach with this.
Warnings: R&R (witchcraft, curses, mystical creatures, star-crossed lovers), violence (building on fire, monster hunt, references to the Revolutionary War)

The plot is relatively simple, so I thought about taking off half a star, but honestly I loved it just as it was. Magical, lyrical, and soft.

Student recommendations are often the best ones. A really beautiful sense of place with a just-right dose of magic. Everything fits together almost too neatly, but the hints of romance and feel good resolutions will have a strong appeal to my middle grade readers on the cusp of middle school.
