“The wolves of war are gathering. They sing a song of rotten bones.”

Set in a post WW II world where the Nazis have conquered large parts of the world (a premise similar to The Man in The High Castle) this story follows Yael, former death camp prisonor, and member of the Resistance movement, on her quest to assassinate Hitler. In order to do so, she must win the annual motorcycle race across the continents.

The plot is fast-paced and intruiging, speckled with flashbacks to Yael's time in death camp and her way into the Resistance, and I found Yael to be a very interesting narrator for this book. It's at times hard to read what she had to go through, but I really liked the way the character - and her experiences - were conveyed. Her inner voice has a very distinct language pattern, and while I'm usually quick to be annoyed by overly artistical writing styles, in this case I found it quite fitting.

There are a few plot points that I wish would've been a bit more fleshed out, but all in all, this was a super intriguing and gripping book and I'm very glad that I finally read it.

The synopsis:

Wolf by Wolf retells the story of World War 2 and answers the question of what would happen if the Axis powers won? If no one stopped Hitler? It is 1955 and World War 2 has ended with Hitlers victory. Yael, a jewish girl is thrown into a death camp with her mother when she is forced to be a test subject for top secret: Experiment 85, a experiment that Dr. Geyer created so that people can turn their hair blonde and eyes blue. When the experiment works, the Dr. is happy but what he doesn't know is that it has a side effect: Yael is now able to shape shift into any female person. She manages to escape the death camp and join the resistance, a group of people against Hitler who soon give her a mission. Every year Hitler hosts a annual Axis Tour, a race across Europe and now Yael is asked to disguise herself as last years winner, Adele Wolf, Win the race and kill Hitler.

The characters:
Yael: I have not seen such a badass female lead in a while so Yael was definitely like a breath of fresh air. She was determined, strong minded yet she had such a liveliness to her that made her such an amazing character. I loved how although it was too through a 3rd point of view, you were really able to get inside her head and over the course of the novel you see some growth to her now as she experiences new things.
Luka Lowe: A racer with the determination to win and who has a very secretive past with Adele. He had a typical bad boy personality and came out a little flat. I hope that in the next book you'll be able to see him grow a little bit more. Don't get me wrong, he was a great character but a bit generic.
Felix: Felix is Adele Wolf's brother and he also came out a bit flat for me. He was a great brother who will do anything for his sister but he wasn't... I guess REAL is the best word for it.

The Review:
I really loved this whole new retelling of World War 2. The way that the author described everything, the details, there was so much figures of speech and it just added this beauty into the novel that almost made her writing appear poetic and powerful. The pacing was steady, it wasn't slow but it was incredibly fast either, it did a good job of building up excitement and you find yourself cheering for this character as if YOU were not only watching the race but in it because she describes the feelings, the stress and fatigue of going days without resting to get ahead of the game, it was just incredible. The whole book played out like a movie and it really had that blockbuster feel to it. Plus, THAT CLIFFHANGER ENDING!!!! OH EM GEE!!! AND THAT PLOT TWIST!!!! AHHH!!! I CAN'T WAIT FOR IT'S SEQUEL!!!!!!

You'll like Wolf by Wolf IF:
You liked the "Inglorious Bastards" movie or Historical fiction or if you love racing or tales of adventure, you definitely have to check this out.

Handled the sensitive topic of WWII terribly and wrote a crappy Mary-Sue-filled, lifeless story.

From the very first page, I was in tears. If that isn't the beginning of a 5* book, then I don't know what is. I think I need to first let you all know that I am a massive history lover, particularly WW2. For some reason, it fascinates me more than anything else, so of course that's made me love this book probably a lot more than I would have if I wasn't completely obsessed with learning about the horrors of Nazi Germany.

oh my goodness. okay i am so caught between rating this a 4.75 or 5, but for now i have decided to give it a 5 because it was quite honestly incredible. i did not go into this thinking it would be anything "too special". there seems to be a common sub-genre of world war ii, or holocaust stories which are intense stories and can be immensely well done. with that said, the genre can be a bit "saturated" at times giving very similar takes to its heartbreaking story. what i have truly come to adore about this book was how it took a genre which had been "done" before, and transformed it into something which shared the same pain as all the other stories yet made it something refreshing.

more thoughts to come (hopefully ahh)

edit: i decided to give it a 4.5 after further though but don't let that deter you from reading this!!
