The story was overall very promising and I was super intrigued by both characters. I like the idea of falling in love with your future ex-husband's killer. The issue is that with a book that short and a more complex plot, the author has often no choice but to sacrifice the depths of the characters. I had difficulties connecting with them and the end felt quite rushed. It left me waiting for more or a longer book.

Started as a 5 star read, then after 60% in fell down to a 2, splitting the difference. 

FX romantic suspense, agender assasin (they/them), bi woman hires them to kill her abusive husband. 

With knowing there's 4 books with the same couple, this ending felt so rushed with all the buildup and sexual tension in the beginning to a month or two in saying I love you and it being this instant togetherness. There's lust and finding another traumatized comrade, but love I'm not too sure on. 

4 books could have really spread out the romance a little bit more in depth imo. 

Wanted a bit more assasin plotline, didn't love the buildup for killing the husband only for a meh execution. 

The sex scenes were great. Light breath play and d/s vibes, I imagine this will get kinkier in the next books! 

I think this could have benefitted from 5-10k more words.

I went into this expecting, from the blurb, that the central premise of an assassin hired by both a husband and wife to kill each other would be more central to the plot. Unfortunately, since this is a very short book, that complication is resolved a bit too easily for my tastes through a technicality and then we have a very fast-paced romance where the assassin, for some strange reason, completely falls for an active client after meeting her literally two times. I would have enjoyed this more if we had a longer book with less instalust and more fleshing out how the assassin falls for someone despite their professional knowledge about it being a very bad idea to be the new person in a married woman's life just before her husband dies.

Anyway, this was quick and engaging enough but with disappointingly low complexity or character development.
