Smut and romance just sorta ruined it for me, I'm not opposed to good romance stories (Bulgakov) - but the unnecessarily graphic and fantastical descriptions kills the vibe. I feel like Rebecca Yarros is writing for the girl equivalent of middle school boys (lit porn vs video), and the whole universe and plot was just a setting for the romance.
Big reveal at the end wasn't exactly surprising (maybe a 4/10 anime surprise scale - attack on titan had much better twists).
But I read this at the bequest of a girl so maybe Violet and I are not all so different?
