i fear went into this for the wrong reasons completely. i love a years long psychological nightmare situationship and thought this would scratch that itch but that element of the book kind of underwhelmed me. like it was good and they had decent chemistry but i wasn’t begging for them to get together or obsessing over the messy twin flames not meant to be together of it all.
but i really loved the coming of age elements and percy’s journey of using music to understand the world and herself. all the music and concert scenes were so atmospheric, i loved the discussion of specific songs and their incorporation into the narrative, i revived many recommendations. holly brickley clearly knows her stuff because it didn’t feel cringe at all. she earned the 4 stars for the leonard cohen joni mitchell graham bash lore drop. really thought there would be way more stevie lindsay allusions then there was.
and yet if the situationship was done better then the whole book would be better. i will be watching the movie and hoping that saoirse ronan has percy bangs.

this + all the songs in an audiobook would be perfection💫

This book took it out of me. There were so many parts that I just HATED and couldn’t wait to get through and then it’d flip a groove and I was sucked back in. At the end of the day, the way this book talks about music is what kept me hooked. I don’t really like Percy, the protagonist, but I love Joe, even with his more limited page time. Though his presence is felt through the whole book. An exceptional example of how music weaves its way into every fiber of our lives and those who create it do so from every fiber of theirs.
