Wow. The emotions around this one. I was not expecting it to be so good.

You will need a box of Kleenex for this read. A whole entire box. While hard to read at times (reasons for the tissues), it was a beautifully told story. The occasional themes of unconditional love are enough to push past the atrocities our main characters have to go through.

I have a little bit of beef with the main character not really standing up for herself, and when she chooses to it's at the worst time and she doesn't think of how everyone else will be affected. Trying to express my thoughts with no spoilers and it's coming out vague 😅.

This book was amazing but disturbing at the same time! I cannot believe the ignorance of people which leads to cruelty. The mental and physical abuse of the albino daughter made me so angry. It didn’t stop there- the cruelty to the animals in the circus was nauseating! Then- the ‘parents’ end up with the granddaughter and the cycle continues!! This book made me cry and yell and want to throw something

WHOA. A hard start, and a hard life. But I am glad the main character found love on her own.

Both main character's had a family that sucked. Selfish - domineering - unkind.
Then the other family Lily got stuck with - also a handful of jerks.

The story shows that there are a few kind souls that want to do the right thing amidst the rubble of this world.

I've been meaning to read this book for some time and I'm happy I got the chance. Lily is sold to the circus by her mother while Julia always found her mother distant and unloving. Julia and Lily's story come to a tumultuous peak towards the end with the author really setting the scene to be frustrating and emotional. That was well done. There are certainly some parts and reactions that made the characters seem too one dimensional and I was frustrated by the loss of a couple main characters with no definite explanations, but I enjoyed it.
