Ad una lettura "superficiale" di questo romanzo, ci si potrebbe chiedere perché Hugo abbia scelto di intitolarlo "I Miserabili", se il protagonista è Jean Valjean. Ma il protagonista non è Jean Valjean, o almeno, non solo lui. Protagonista è la società francese della prima metà dell'800, soprattutto i suoi strati più bassi ed emarginati: Jean Valjean, ex galeotto in perenne lotta tra il suo passato e la sua voglia di riscattarsi e cambiare vita;
Fantine, sedotta e abbandonata dal suo innamorato alla notizia di una gravidanza e costretta ad affidare sua figlia a un'altra famiglia per riuscire a lavorare;
Cosette, la figlia di Fantine, trattata come una serva dalla famiglia che avrebbe dovuto occuparsi di lei, e che invece la sfrutta solo per il lavoro che può fare e per i soldi che procura loro tramite la madre;
il popolino francese in odore di rivoluzione contro il governo.
Tutti, a loro modo, sono dei Miserabili e tutti intrecciano le loro vite in questo affresco commovente, ma anche crudo e veritiero.

A great story, but man does Hugo like to talk. But so do I, so I can’t hold it against him too much. Characters are interesting, plot interesting, but really a lot of exposition that could have been cut down.
