I wanted to like this book so badly, and in the end I did, but it was definitely a struggle. The beginning was very slow and not really what I was looking for, but I’m glad I pushed through, because the rising tension and climax were a very good pay off.

3.5

Looking beyond yourself and figuring out your place in the world are two strong themes in this book. The understanding that you can belong more than one place completes the storyline, in a book full of strong willed and intelligent women who try not to get lost in their family's expectations coupled with their own.
The story also used Fae mythology as a vehicle to share the struggle of women to be acknowledged in a male dominated society. There is an interesting past/future view of what the world looks like as a woman whose existence is tied to her husband, and what can happen when she breaks free from that structure.

“A deftly spun tale of folklore and sisterhood” -Rebecca Ross
I went into this book expecting a heartwarming cozy tale of two sisters who would do anything for one another. Instead, it felt more like two entirely separate stories which occasionally interlaced. It wasn’t until over halfway through the story that these two even really began to fight for each other. Leading up, they were both very stubborn, singleminded, and even selfish. Still, I enjoyed this book even if it took me until the halfway mark to be truly invested. The fae world was beautiful crafted and intriguing, and the songs and trades were fascinating to read about- It left me believing in a little bit of magic.

3.5 stars. A nice fairy story intermingled with a historical fiction.

A vivid world of magic realism that brings fairy bargains to life against an Edwardian backdrop. Fairy bargains tangle into the lives of a family and their homestead as two sisters navigate the struggles of being women before their enfranchisement. It all goes wrong, and only working together can they hope to make it right. A slow start with a strong finish. Content warning for domestic violence.

Midwest farming, rising feminism, and the Fae? In the early 1900s? It works. This was a fun story to see unfold.

Where does this take place, and why does it sound like Ohio? The author plants enough typical Midwest tidbits in with the right level of vague that any reader could imagine it as their version of an American country town.

Readers may find some parts a bit slow going and the transition in the story from one world to the other jarring. For me, that was a poignant flip. Just when I was absolutely sick of human society, the story throws you into a magical escape.
