This book was selected for a book club, and I am so glad that it was, because I would not otherwise have picked it up! I found it to be an extremely compelling narrative, exploring the breakdown of Yugoslavia through the lens of the breakdown of one family. Vojnovic provides rich descriptions and dry wit that seem to have been captured faithfully by the English translation. If I had one gripe, it's that the female characters only have roles in relation to the main character, Vladan. Nonetheless, a great read.

Having lived in Bosnia and worked within the Republika Srpska for a year or so this book struck a deep chord in me.  A chord for a place of history and a people who persevere.  Loved it.

Голову Гіммлера звуть Гайдріх|Laurent Binet|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1578781771l/36601970._SX50_.jpg|12476227] посідає почесне звання моєї улюбленої на даний момент книга, то Югославія, моя батьківщина десь дуже близько.
Книга має в собі достатньо багато справжніх історичних дат, щоб бути більш-менш непоганим джерелом (ну складно мені читати історично хроніку, ну вибачте, справді не можу), і при бажанні все можна перевірити.
Головний персонаж книги - син сербського воєнного злочинця, дитинство якого обірвалось з початком війни, хоча, здавалось би, самої війни він в принципі і не бачив. Та назважаюяи на це, війна його переїбала, і в результаті ми маємо емоційно незрілого, замкнутого, самотнього персонажа, який повторює ті самі помилки своєї матері, що в свій час зламали його, відштовхубчи найближчу людину.
Молодий чоловік дізнається, що його давномертвий батько - живий живісінький, та ще й злочинець. Він вирушає на його пошуки, і особисто мені, закінчення цієї сюжетної лінії сподобалос. It was satisfactory.
Окремим бонусом, було приємно читати книгу, і більш-менш розуміти, що відбувається, а також, читаючи про численні населені пункти, вже дещо знати про багато з них.

I think that this is going to be one of those books that stays with me long after I have read it.

Vladan Borojević, the novel’s narrator, finds out that his supposedly long-dead father, Nedelko, is alive and wanted for war crimes committed during the Yugoslav wars. The book skillfully interweaves Vladan’s personal story with a larger story about the breakup of Yugoslavia, and life in the post-Yugoslav states.

I found this book very hard to put down! I felt invested in Vladan’s story from the very first page and couldn’t wait to find out what happened to him, both as a child and as an adult searching for his father.

The only slightly negative comment I have on this book is that the language sometimes felt a little clunky. I am not sure if this is a feature of the original Slovenian text or whether it is a translation issue.
