Great YA. I loved this, it was so much fun. It starts off slow but that's okay. I liked the balance between politics and magic, even though I didn't quite understand the magic. I enjoyed the characters and their relationships - I'm a shipper at heart and this was good for that. The mystery and story and twists were generally well done.

This was an overall good ya fantasy. I liked the characters and the plot though predictable was still enjoyable. My main reason for this getting a 3.75 instead of a 4 is because it became dull or stagnet at times. It was still a good story things just could have been faster or cut out.

I've always loved me some Arthurian legend, and Kiersten White has become one of those authors I will actively seek out. So when the two are combined? Heaven.

We get a different take on the stories, starring Guinevere. There is less overt feminism than in Mists of Avalon but it's clear that neither Guinevere nor her maid/confidant Brangien are to be trifled with. The usual suspects are here albeit with somewhat different characteristics than their originals - sadly, most seem muted. Arthur reminded me of a puppy, always up for action and running around and eager to be loved but not quite mature enough for running a kingdom. It's the world-building, the dragging out of what's going on, the twists that are telegraphed and the need to keep this going for at least one more book that lost me. Ultimately I rounded up from 3.5 because most of the ideas were good, albeit a little stretched out.

The pacing of the novel was a little uneven with too much background being laid at the beginning. But once the reader gets close to the end, this is a hard book to put down! I love how the author reimagined the tales of Merlin and King Arthur and hopefully readers who are unfamiliar with the stories will still find the plot and action intriguing.

The first in a series. I'm excited for the sequel. Grades 7 and up.
