3.9 AVERAGE

I hate giving this book a 3 star review because there were parts of it that were great, and the writing (or translation, I suppose) was so beautiful. However, I think the story as a whole was not as good as its individual parts. For one, I think the story tried to do too many things and go in too many different directions. Several plot points I thought would be important later on ended up leading to nothing (such as with his mother), and there were several plot points that did not make much sense to me. Secondly, maybe it is because this is the second book in the series and I never read the first one, but basically the last two or three chapters lost me. I didn't really understand what the big deal was with him creating a religion??? Like... why? Why is this such a life or death dire thing? Also Christina was just meh. Why did David have to constantly lust after her when she was pretty crappy to him overall? I will say that the audio quality was phenomenal (as is the usual with Dan Stevens narrating), and I loved the interactions between Isabella and David. I kept waiting for them to interact again. Even when he was mean to her, I kept waiting for her to show up, and she was the one bright spot in the book. I will also say the ending made me cry. I've heard good things about the first book, so maybe I'll check it out now.

I wanted to love this book (a gift from a friend) but did not. It began with great promise, and contains some beautiful turns of phrase. But it's too long by half. A cliffhanger/mystery/supernatural thriller should not elicit yawns as one wonders when one can possibly finish the book. Have heard good things about the author's previous novel in comparison - shall have to seek it out.

Prequel to the shadow of the wind. Both weirder, even less reliable narration, and a lot less funny. I liked it a lot. I also liked Dan Steven's narration better than the other guy.

Great follow up book because it has a lot of the same stuff as the first one but takes it in a really different direction.
