3.9 AVERAGE

I listened to this book

I think Carlos Ruiz Zafón has already achieved one thing that all writers (at least, if I were one) would like to achieve: whenever people read some of your words (and it doesn't even need to be a long chapter), they recognize you immediately. Even without all the little references to The Shadow of the Wind - I particularly loved one, very near the end, which I can't reveal, so not to spoil anything -, or maybe because I've read TSOTW so many times already, I think I would recognize his style, his words, his everything, anywhere. I found this book a little darker than the previous one and at the beginning that was bothering me a little, but then I just embraced it and went with it and it made for a magical reading, to the point where I stopped myself from reading too much too soon, to make the book last a little longer. Maybe because of that "suspense" that I exaggerated a little, I was expecting a bit more in the end, and I feel like I didn't get all the answers I needed and deserved after so much mystery and drama, and that's why I don't give it 5 stars. But it's a solid 4,5!

I wanted to give 5 stars but the fact that it kept me for more than 3 quarters of the book without having any idea what is going on made me a bit annoyed.
It is a really good book and I totally recommend it!

Listened to on audible. I love the way this author writes, the Gothic feel and setting, the sense of mystery and wonder. It's probably not fair to compare this book to the previous one (The Shadow of the Wind); however this one doesn't quite live up to expectations, mainly due to the last part of the book. There's too much ambiguity as to what really happened, and whether or not to trust the narrator's version of events. Also, most of the characters (including the narrator) weren't very likable, which made it hard to care. It will be interesting to see if the 3rd book in the series clears any of this up.
