I think I need to just not read the first half of these from now on since there seems to be no editor involved whatsoever with these books. At this point I’m fairly tired of Claire and Jamie, particularly with Jamie and how perfect he is - he is a soldier, a printer, a (treasonous) writer, a leader, he can (spoiler alert... although of COURSE this would happen) fight a bear with his bare hands, he even knows how to knit! I get it: he’s great. There were some weird points in this book in particular that didn’t track with me, like Claire was raised by an archaeologist and also had a medical background but doesn’t know Latin?? She doesn’t get bored living in the wilderness?? (and then it turns out that she’s been attending to folks in the neighboring villages and such and we’ve just been stuck w only her and Jamie instead of meeting more personalities). I did like seeing Brianna and Roger so much more involved and probably would’ve just liked this to be told from one of their views; forget the weird narrator perspective change every five chapters!
I look forward to the show but I am glad to be done with this one!

Yes!!

Meh. It’s fun if you want to read a couple of good sex scenes, but everything else just felt.... weirdly wrong.

“Still less could I be afraid of those ghosts who touch my thoughts in passing. Any library is filled with them. I can take a book from dusty shelves, and be haunted by the thoughts of one long dead, still lively as ever in their winding sheet of words.”

I really wanted to like this book so much more than I did. It took so long to read because I was kind of avoiding it. About 400 pages in I accepted that it wasn’t getting better and started skimming dozens of pages at a time.
One of my major critiques is that everything felt so contrived. The misunderstandings between many of the main characters would have been easily resolved in a few more words of conversation. It felt like reading entirely new characters who had lost the ability to communicate effectively.
Claire was also a lot more impetuous, and then passive in her dynamic with family. I didn’t believe any of them the way I did and book one and parts of book 3.
It’s so hard to invest in a story when you were hyper aware that you’re reading fiction. That’s how I felt throughout this book, sadly. I think a lot of the plot points could have been removed and we would have ended up in the same place. Roger was my favorite character, but he too was problematic.
I think I’ll take a pause and read a few non-Gabaldon books after this. 😬

Claire, Jamie en de rest van hun gang maakten weer heel veel mee wat Diana Gabaldon altijd heerlijk weet te beschrijven.
Heerlijk boek!
