Took a bit to get into the characters but about 1/3 through it just clicked and I was hooked. Loved the writing and historical elements with touches of magic. So much grit and pain and beauty.

This is an excellent book that turned out to be something unexpected. I loved the characters, the use of photography to help tell the story, and the magical realism woven with actual U.S. history. I hope to see this on “best book” lists at the end of the year. Don’t skip the  author’s note at the end.

sometimes I am sure a book will be 5 stars before I even read it. and this actually managed to live up to expectations.
it's about the dust storms in 1930s America and about forgetting and about complicity in stealing native American lands. it's also about a witch, a scarecrow, a girl, and a cat.
