A camera that sees more than what’s in front of it is a great metaphor for fiction—looking at the world and imaging what lies beneath the conscious of it. Of us. And Karen Russel does a great job of just that, bringing a barren landscape to stirring life.

Glad I stuck with this one - ended up really liking it. As someone who has never stopped thinking about The Giver and enjoyed Four Winds, I liked the way it tackles ideas about memory, both collective and individual, in the Dust Bowl setting. I think Cleo’s story was my favorite and I wish we got more of her. I also wish we got more of Asphodel’s love story! Audio book was really well done, I liked that format especially since we were switching POVs a fair amount.

Enjoyed the history and prairie witch storylines, but found the basketball, cat, and scarecrow plots overdone and annoying

2 ⭐️ this book was ok for about the first 2/3, the last 1/3 absolutely lost me. It went completely off the rails and nothing that happened made much sense. And talk about a stupid ending!

I love how the author used magical realism to fill in what we can’t know about the past or future, and make us reconsider what histories and narratives we’ve been told.
