What a surprisingly delightful treat. I knew so little about Samuel Adams, and this book brought him to life — along with many critical moments leading up to the American Revolution. There’s much to enjoy and learn here.

I love the Revolution but still learned a lot from this book. I knew little of Samuel Adams and his biography was a good way to learn about Boston's centrality in the Revolution. He had a boring first and third act but was instrumental in fomenting rebellion. Schiff is a good writer and I enjoyed her prose.

For all the positives above, I still had a hard time paying attention. I found myself constantly drifting off and having to rewind. I cannot explain why. No weakness in the writing comes to mind.

The writing could use work. I never really got into the flow, and the beginning was jarring since it really gave no context.

This is more a book of what led up to the American Revolution than it is about Samuel Adams. In the former context, it is a good book. In the latter, it is lacking. This is somewhat understandable, as Schiff points out a lack of historical information about Samuel Adams. Less understandable is how quickly she skims through his life from 1776 to his death in 1803.
