Early hagiography settles down into a move even-handed view of this difficult figure. Demonstrates clearly that political shenanigans, manipulation, and mob motivation are not unique to today.

Review is for audiobook. I enjoyed listening to it in the car and learned a lot. That said, there were parts I couldn’t follow what was going on and I thought it was because I couldn’t pay super close attention since I was driving. Reading the other reviews, is suspect the issue was actually the book.

While I learned a lot of interesting facts about Samuel Adams, the writing was all over the place and sometimes hard to understand. This book would have benefited from a strong editor to bring more structure to sentences - and sometimes entire paragraphs - that were difficult to follow.

I found this book difficult to read, only because I'm not used to reading historical nonfiction books. I read this for a book club. I was surprised to discover Samuel Adams' history and work as a patriot. It is interesting how he is hardly mentioned in the history books, yet played a very important role!

I was really excited by this book but I was sorely disappointed. The subject, Samuel Adams, is a fascinating. The author, Stacy Schiff, is well-respected (she’s a Pulitzer winner!). But something was just off with this book. There is little narrative flow to the book. It’s hard to follow exactly what Schiff is trying to stay. This book could have benefited from more editing.
