While this definitely gave me a new love and appreciation for Samuel Adams, I did struggle with the book itself. Mostly it felt like we spent a lot of time with other people, and then the pacing threw me off because I didn't realize that it was primarily focused on the pre-Revolutionary War time period until I was way deep into the book. So it wasn't a bad audiobook, but it could have been shorter.

Phew! This one took some effort... and mostly in a good way. A very (at times awkwardly written) interesting story about a man we have a vague memory of, from learning about the founding fathers of this country. Samuel was not only pivotal in the instigation of the Revolutionary War, but also quite the manipulator in the press. At times, while reading, I really disliked him. He wrote in several different newspapers of the time using several different pseudonyms... making the community think there was a common thought that the colonies should separate from Britain, when it was really just him. It was good to see that he eventually was involved in the Committees of Correspondence which included several colonies and many people in their efforts. I learned a lot about this time period, how this country came together, all the egos and bravery, how some nefarious folks of today use these techniques, and how today differs from 1776. Adams himself... while possibly used as an example of a revolution we should copy today, drew an “inviolable line between upending an arbitrary administration imposed from abroad (his desire to upend British hold on the colonies) and upending an administration freely and fairly elected at home.” Sooooo, I am glad I read this, even though at times it felt like a bit of a slog, I took many notes and will review them so at the very least, I can remember the parallels to today and the importance of knowing why its different.
