As somebody who lives in Portland, this was a fun one. Definitely dark and gritty and you learn so much about the characters and your perception of them changes over time. It was fun to hear about her going to places I've been or go often and the dilemma of affording to buy a house in Portland is very topical. I really enjoyed it!

I have heard the question “What’s the weirdest reason you stopped reading a book?” I’ve never had a DNF for an odd reason until now. I just could not get over how many times the phrase “…you know it/that/this” was used in the span of 2 conversations and the word “know” just started irking me more and more each time I came across it until I had to stop. Definitely a me problem. 😂

Was a little too slow for me but really well written all throughout.

I read this entirely too fast. I wanted more of Lynette’s story. There were times where the dialogue felt a bit like “yeah! And the reader also doesn’t know this! So let’s talk about how this happened in detail so the reader knows our history!!” But that’s okay. I enjoyed it. I’m not sure who sucks most in this story, but I think that’s life.

For those reading now, 2 stars was generous. I struggled through because I felt it was my penance for having read three FIVE stars stories in a row.

I’m going to have to go for a run to get this negative energy out of my brain.

Suggest: move on.

Vlautin always creates a dark and dismal atmosphere for his characters, and then makes them do and say things that just makes my jaw drop! But that's why I keep reading him. In his latest novel, Lynette is a struggling bartender who lives with her loser mom and developmentally disabled 30-year-old brother. Lynette has done some desperate things while trying to save thousands of dollars to purchase they house they currently rent, and shit hits the fan. There was a bit too much storytelling of her past for me to give this five stars (I wanted to stick with the current situations), but it was an engrossing listen. If I had read it, I would have been highlighting certain sentences that stuck with me, but that's hard to do while driving down an interstate and listening!
