i haaatteedd this. if it weren't a book club pick i absolutely would have dnf'd. this book was a slog start to finish. it was poorly written and poorly thought out. i think the narrative style and the pacing were the main issues because no tension was ever allowed to build due to those things. we spent so much time on things that werent important that character development and relationships never got the time they needed and even major plot points that had been told to the reader were "dangerous" and "scary" for most of the book were over in less than a chapter each. the pacing made it hard for me to care about either the characters OR the plot. plus the dialog was cringey and bad, the characterization of our main character was really unclear, and the writing was SO repetative. the references to real world stories and movies were so so heavy handed that they took me out of the story every time. i could honestly go on for hours about everything i didnt like about this book.

I’m a fantasy reader, and let me tell you I found myself falling asleep. The first 250 pages could have honestly been made into 50 pages and I couldn’t waste more time on a book

Wow this book will live with me for a long time. Truly a masterpiece and a thrill to read. I know I’ll be rereading it again at some point!

It was a bit long and felt like it was dragging at some points, but overall one of my favorite King books.

I will be the first to admit my aversion of fantasy. I just never seem to get into it, but this book was different. The style of writing and dialogue hooked me into it, and it only took me a couple of days to finish. It was sad, and kept me guessing on every single turn. I just finished it and i feel like I have seen a movie in my head with this book. Definitely an underrated read and well deserved 5 stars. Of course, I love the connection to Radar, it reminds me of my own dog, but Charlie as a character was so likable and everything that happened was so interesting and written in a way that I felt like I was on the adventure with him.
