This story is written so beautifully, the characters so charming, I felt transported to a different time and place. It took me awhile to read it as it is very slow paced and I had to get into the rhythm of William’s rambling descriptions but once I did, it was as if I was sitting with a charming Irishman as he told a story of his past with all the details and rabbit holes that Irish storytelling entails. This is not a criticism, I loved it. A beautiful coming of age story about first loves, regrets and the future landing on the doorstep. I am of similar age as the narrator (author maybe?) and I was reminded of my own awareness of change announcing itself as color television, dishwasher s and electric typewriters then computers came on the scene. Electricity arriving in this small , rural town is a game changer for these people yet, is it really all for the better? I enjoyed the narrator’s navigation of loss and first love, Christy’s commitment to righting the wrongs he has committed and Ganga and Doady’s simple life. This is happiness indeed.

Beautifully written, rambling prose and imagery that immerse you in the time, place and people while at the same time leading you to reflect on your own memories and feelings towards past, present and future. Such a gem of a book!
