What a joyful novel. I really adore character driven novels and this one is right up there. The audio narrator added to the reflective element. A thoughtful take on what it means to be human and mortal and the importance of living well and with kindness. Its reflective voice, with the narrator sharing a turning point in his life at age seventeen from the viewpoint of now being in his seventies worked really well.

DID NOT FINISH

Ok not giving a rating the issue was me, not necessarily the book. There were parts that were beautifully written, but I was deceived by the synopsis and didn’t realize it would be such a religion-entwined story. I did get it from a church thrift sale so that explains heavy catholic references I suppose lol and I just can’t keep up. I only got 18% through.

Accepting Ann Patchett's recommendation from Parnassus I enjoyed 12 hours of the most wonderful read.
To quote Ron Charles from The Washington Post....
"..If you’re a reader of a certain frame of mind, craving a novel of delicate wit laced with rare insight, this, truly, is happiness. "

And it truly was.

This is a lyrical coming of age story, set in the fictional town of Faha in rural Ireland in the 1950s. It is an unexpected love story and an ode to deep relationships and acceptance of people in all their strengths and foibles. There are profound insights into what makes life worth living on every page.

I listened to the book read by Dermot Crowley in a fetching Irish rogue. Niall Williams was not on my radar. He is now.
