This book meandered from start to finish. It was kind of like a poignant, sun-gleamed montage (you know the type) that lasts for many hours. The setting (a small, rural Irish town on the eve of getting electricity) is fascinating; the characters especially are beautiful; the description is funny, inventive, loving, heartfelt. I especially liked the way that the narrator (now an old man) tries to be faithful to the feelings of his youth during the telling of the story. Long, and good!

The book was lovely and sometimes quite lyrical. It was easy to fall for some of the characters, but there were also times when it was incredibly slow and overly drawn out. Maybe that was meant to make you feel the slowness of time in rural Ireland, but it might still have been overdrawn a bit. The side comments sometimes took one a bit too far down a wandering path. But the story and characters were sweet. I can imagine that if you really know the area and culture it would be captivating.
