Ennis knows how to run with joke just far enough so that he doesn't gag on it. This book carefully balances humor with horror in a way that feels absolutely natural for a wasteland environment. It's desperate and forsaken. Giving up is an option but nobody wants to choose it. The Pilgrim is both damnation and salvation.
