I struggled a bit with this one.  In my opinion (for me) Sarah Waters can be a bit of an overwriter.  

I did enjoy the structure of this, we go back through time learning how our characters get to where they are at the beginning of the book. It gives many opportunities to say "oh no don't do that" to the characters. Overall the characters were fine. I think Kay may have been my favorite.  I don't think Duncan was as flushed out as he could have been (even with all the words Water uses!). Some important topics are grazed upon. People who enjoy WWII novels will like this one.

I finished it, and it was a nice display of diversity but perhaps historical fiction just isn't my cuppa. Felt slow at times, and it was hard to get behind the characters' motivations
