Only giving it a 4 because of the end. THE PARALLELS. When Kay met Helen she told her about Julia but Helen didn’t remember because she was in morphine? Madness. Kay joking about Helen being the reason she would get kicked out of the service and then it’s implied she actually is when she runs away to Helen’s to see if she’s dead? Madness. Fuck Julia, all my homies hate Julia. Also I really liked the small link between viv and Kay. All in all not enough story.
Anyway. Kay is the only good person in this book, she deserves the world and I would die for her. Pooh.

Ah what a retrospective. Listened to it this time round. I’ve been inundated with lesbians in Sarah waters so I literally did not care at all about Duncan or viv so that’s probably why I’ve not read the little stranger yet. I find it hilarious I think, after tipping the velvet and fingersmith etc I just have zero interest in the cis hetero narratives just at all. Says a lot about me I suppose. Still believe kay is the best character in the book. Fuck mystery, I covet gallantry.

I just lost steam and interest. The backwards storytelling wasn’t my style and there was a LOT of storytelling.

Ok, I get that working backwards from 1947 to 1944 to 1940 is a different and interesting narrative device. Really. And I get that I've been reading formulaic crap for months and that if/when I start reading stuff that actually challenges my mind again I'll have to embrace interesting narrative devices. That said, the structure didn't completely work for me. At the end of the first section, I wanted to know about the future for the four central characters, not the past. Maybe I should try reading the sections in a different order...
Narrative structure aside, I liked it. Sometimes it's nice to read a book about another time and realize you're reading about a world where you can see yourself and your community.

Really beautiful and hot. Had a lot of layers to it that I don't even know if I fully took them all in. With the backwards chronological nature of the story, it really did make me keep wanting to go back and reread previous chapters with the new information I had. Something of Helen's insecurity and infatuation with her partners hit too close to home, can't lie. I almost wish we could see more of these characters and their lives--I feel like I'm just starting to understand who they are and where they came from, and now I'm anxious to see where they're going next. But this isn't that kind of story, and that's ok!
