3 stars. I don’t have much to say about this one but it was definitely my least favorite by Waters thus far. The writing was gorgeous and lush as always but the plot meandered and did not hold my attention. I was bored for majority of it. Also none of the characters were memorable and I didn’t like any of them. Unfortunate but I feel like this is one that would probably fare better upon a re-read.

I thought that I was going to love this book! Seemed to be the exact type of historical fiction that I would love but the first half of the book was so boring. It took me so much longer to finish this book because I was just not motivated to read it. I really wanted to just put it down all together and not finish but I told myself to push through cause I thought it would get better. Probably the last 15% or less of the book was the only part that I enjoyed. I just wanted to be more connected to the characters and the story line.

Enjoyed but the way it went backward in time feels like a lot was unresolved

i think after tipping the velvet my expectations were just a little too high for this book. great for gay people who like wartime stories though i'm sure

A solid novel, I’m not too sure how I felt about the structure of the book. Otherwise this was a standard Sarah Waters book, lesbians and, solidly researched historical fiction. She really loved a botched abortion storyline though

This was very vivid and sensual—a hallmark of Waters—but I found it a bit difficult to get into between the shifting points of view and the very long chapters. I did like the backwards structure, which lent things a real poignancy.

super good, super gay

I loved this, as I love all of Sarah Waters's works. Beautifully written, with amazing characters and a really interesting structure. Sarah Waters writes about history so fantastically.
