adventurous medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Plot

This book has better pacing than Messiah which was the biggest issue before. Compared to Dune, this book focuses more of philosophy which is hard to follow a lot of the time. I thought the story was still easy to follow if you don't let yourself get bogged down by trying to understand the deeper meaning passages (which could just be a personal problem lol). But the plot was still good and the end section of the book was my favorite part. It all built up nicely to the end with a lot of pay off. There are still a lot of questions that I think will be answered more in the later books.

When I was younger, I did not understand this tale. Maybe I was used to Homeric stories of heroes, villains and consequences. Unexplained character motivations, jumps in plot and pacing, shifting of reality and myths about the Messiah, had left me confused and emotionally constipated. Today I feel enlightened and excited; I could not put this book down. I don’t know if I’ve changed or the world has.

Dune Messiah says even with a real, prescient prophet, humanity cannot help but destroy much of itself. Even if the hero were to fail to become the villain, our actions would make them so. Now with the Creepy AF children it’s not just further shifting sand, not just a rejection of the current tyrant, is our very nature what holds us back? Layers within layers, now we have to destroy the Messiah and replace with, I’m sorry, what?? How is this better, and what sort of balance will this create? I don’t understand where this is going. Balance is a fig leaf when a tyrant or religion speaks. I’m still uncomfortable (mentally bloated?) that an even better tyrant or god could lead the people out of the darkness. More will fall and who know what comes out of these ashes.

My family would agree I’m not a terribly Zen person. I don’t know why I’m reading this galactic train wreck and saying: come what may. But I am.

I continue to be surprised by how logical a continuation the story is from the previous book and that's not necessarily a good thing. I feel this is the beginning of the descent into something truly bizarre
