After finishing this book, I can’t accurately describe how this story made me feel. This book is the most epic, mesmerizing, fantastic, mind-blowing, gorgeous, intelligent, piece of other world fiction that I’ve ever read and now my absolute favorite book I’ve ever read. Nothing can beat this. Nothing. Unless the sequels are even better. “Fear is the mind killer”

A kind of ending for the Dune-story, at least for now and for most of the main characters. In Children of Dune, Herbert picks up on many of the story threads and characters from the two previous books. Alia Atreides is the Empress, ruling the Empire, but her leadership is failing and the circumstances around her birth are beginning to affect her. The children of Paul, born in similar circumstances and with the knowledge of their ancestry are brought up and trained by Stilgar, Alia and soon by their grandmother Lady Jessica, but they have plans of their own. While the adults are trying to keep the Empire under control, the children are trying to stay alive and begin to explore the Golden Path, that their father Paul foresaw.

The story is fairly quick-paced but still lasts for around a year or so, we jump from character to character and follow their inner-monologues, their intrigues and fight for survival. Especially the thoughts and discussions of the twins Leto and Ghanima are high level and difficult to grasp or understand, but most of my confusion was resolved by the end. The big theme in the story is the changes brought on by Paul and how it affects the environment, the future of the worms and space travel as well as tourism and the identity of being a freeman. A good and enjoyable next chapter in the Dune universe.
