It started out slow for me and I am so glad I stuck it out because after that it was roller coaster ride! The writing is beautiful and I savored some of her phrases!

When I read the back-cover description of this book, I thought it'd be a home run. I purchased it from a local bookstore - my first book purchased in a long while- and I was excited to dive in. Unfortunately, it was just okay.
I think there is a potentially great story here, but I found it to be very long-winded and not all that engaging. In the second 2/3's of the book I found myself having to read it out loud in order to stay focused as my mind would wander and I'd have to go back and re-read entire pages. Something about the flow was just off, and while I think the characters are well written, there is a lot of repetition, and the plot just kind of fell flat.
In the first line of the acknowledgements, the author writes, "If I were to tell you the tale of writing this book, it would go like this: Once there was a girl with a story she wanted to tell. She'd told stories before, so she set sail boldly. Very soon she found herself lost at sea, besieged by plot twists and broken acrs, murky metaphors and shifting themes. She had the words, but she lost her way and her will."
When I read that, I thought, "Yeah, exactly."
The book just kind of felt all over the place. As a reader, I often felt lost - like I'd missed a paragraph or an entire page, but I hadn't, so I kept pushing on hoping things would iron themselves out. Truthfully, I thought about abandoning it a few times, but I'd already invested so much time on it. Plus the end of the year is rapidly approaching and I'll be damned if I don't hit my reading goal for the year. However, going into next year, I think I'm going to go with my gut, and if the story isn't for me, I'm going to let it go.
I love the intent and the overall messages of this book in regards to sisterly bonds, feminism, witches and power, but other books have done it so much better.

I loved so much about this! Characters, plot, dialogue, the world building, the way magic is explained. My only issue was the overly verbose writing style that gave a sort of detached view of the story. There was a lot of beautiful poetic moments but sometimes the facts of the story were buried underneath the wordiness.
