i read through this bc of the movie that’s coming out (and brendan fraiser’s comeback!!!!!!!!!) and wow. it def was a heavy read. Charlie is one of the most sympathetic characters in the book( aside from liz) and everyone else is kinda mean. he definitely is sad, which the sadness compels him to binge, but he is also a kind teacher, a loving parent, and someone who reflects on his mistakes (though def unhealthily internalizes his guilt and pain). I’m still unsure abt how to feel about Charlie’s fatness basically being a metaphor or smth abt his life going downhill (and the constant descriptions and actions to suggest disgust).
not a really big fan abt that. otherwise, a heartbreakingly read that im interested to see how a24 gets it down.

An excessively obese man hides away in his apartment eating himself to death. His one last desire is to reconnect with his long estranged daughter as he pursues his last hope of redemption.
I’m not quite sure why I had this compulsion to read the original play before seeing the movie, and that is what I did. I read the play in the morning and watched the movie in the evening. However, having done that, I feel I might suggest that seeing it in the theater or watching the movie first might be advised. There are differences, a second room in the movie, some theatrical monologues presented differently, but the movie is close to the original and the whole visual experience enhances rather than detracts from the experience. It is a fascinating play, and one that ensures my commitment to read other works by this playwright. A thought provoking and somewhat harrowing couple of hours.

A quick but impactful read. Would be great to see on stage, I actually pictured it as a play in my head thanks to all the stage direction and setting given on the page. The characters were well-developed despite the short script and the message was powerful.
