I have only ever read about the current plastic surgery practices, so diving into the history of that was fascinating. I had no idea that artists played such a huge role in the birth of this field. It was horrific that it all happened in the war context but it's amazing how much it has changed lives since then for people with fire injuries and injured in all types of accidents.

3.5 rounding up to four, i really enjoyed fitzharris' previous book, the butchering art, so i was excited to read this. overall i found it really interesting and informative, though noticeably more repetitive. kind of felt like reading a dan brown novel in its pacing and style, regardless, really appreciated this close look at an aspect of medical science and war that is often overlooked

I think this was an excellent historical piece on the unique facial/jaw injuries associated with trench warfare and the advent of plastic surgery. Entertaining!
