As much as I loved Normal People, I had only moderate expectations for this one based on what others had told me about it, and sure enough this read like an undeveloped idea that could only get published on the coattails of a much better and more popular first effort. I love Rooney's fascination with smart but emotionally unstable young adults. The ones populating this story, however, didn't always feel like fully thought out characters. Frances in particular but basically everyone in this book acted on motivations that were difficult to pin down. It isn't that the characters were unlikable—never a prerequisite for a good story—but that they all seemed to be acting on random impulse. The result being that there was no story, that nobody gets anywhere. A lot happens but nothing does.
I didn't dislike the book. Like Normal People, I had a hard time putting it down. In the end, though, it feels a little half-baked.

5/5.
A great book, my third time reading it. Super super readable, I’ve probably read it the three times within the span of a seven days, just split into two day segments over several years.
Definitely my favourite of her books. Unfortunately, with each subsequent book of hers, she seems to pursue directions I struggle to enjoy in any way. But this book is great, even if the characters are stupid.
Would recommend.

Why do I feel bad for not loving this book more. I think it was a case of bad timing because I feel like I’ve read sooo many books lately about a young girl having an affair with a married man that this felt a bit meh to me. I audiobooked and found myself zoning out multiple times. Overall it was beautifully written but unfortunately hasn’t sparked anything in me. I found it hard to be invested because I didn’t really care about any of the characters. Still very keen to keep trying more of Sally’s books!
