Very clever spy thriller. I'm glad this was the first book I read by John Le Carré.

If you look beyond the misogyny then it's a cracking little cold war read.

This is the first book by John le Carré that I have read. It is also one of the first books that is strictly espionage that I have read. I found out about John le Carré due to the series based on his novel "The Night Manager". Personally, I thought John le Carré's writing style was magnificent. Normally I am not drawn to these types of stories but this one captured my interest from the very beginning and held it all the way through. I couldn't devour the pages fast enough in order to figure out what would happen next. Very well done. I was a bit disappointed that there was a lack of important female characters, but I didn't feel like that detracted too much from the story especially factoring in the time period in which it is based.

John le Carré’s The Spy Who Came In From The Cold, his first internationally successful novel is a wonderful spy thriller, it’s intelligence and counterintelligence between the GDR and the UK during the Cold War, the background being the Berlin Wall and the two sides trying to outsmart the other to protect both their own nations but also their spies.  I am not going to write a long review here, it’s an old book with many people before me naming it a classic, and I agree. It’s clever, it’s dark, it’s high drama, it’s tense, it’s melancholic.  A really exciting story and one which fits into the George Smiley story arc.

An easy read if you enjoy a good fast paced thriller.  Would recommend it.
