I had a healthy appreciation for Springsteen's music, but knew little about the man. What struck me most were his respect for his audience. I also loved that music didn't come naturally to him, that he worked crazy hard for a long time to actually get good at his passion.

The man's a natural born storyteller, and listening to this as an audiobook meant hearing him tell his own story, in his own way. What a joy. I'm not usually one for autobiographies, but I loved this for its lyricism how open it is about mental health.

I started reading this book and when the audio version became available I switched to that because it's read by THE BOSS himself! He covers his whole life--home life, band life, solo life, family life. Interestingly, Bruce got himself a guitar as a youngster then determined to teach himself to play it. He really did play til his fingers bled. He worked really hard for many years to become a superstar. He acknowledges the amazingness of it all when, at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he is situated between Mick Jagger and Paul McCartney, two of his childhood heros--A Rolling Stone and a Beatle! He says of all the kids growing up listening, some decided to learn guitar, of those some played, of those some played in a band, of those some played in a successful mid-level band, of those some bands made a living, of those one--Bruce Springsteen--became a superstar!
Couldn’t finish…. 5 hours in audio book and it was putting me to sleep.
Just like his concert, you don't want it to end. In fact, I purposefully read this slowly to savor it. I just want him to keep telling me his stories--and I *know* he's got more to tell! His story is difficult to read at times--because you ache for him. Overall, he's optimistic and gives a realistic portrayal of living with mental illness, both in a family member and himself. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't dominate the book in any way but hearing it so vividly from a man with such endless energy is shaking to the core. after I finish up my book club books, I may just go ahead and read it again. ..
