This is the second in a long series featuring Inspector Wexford. So far, I am unconvinced that Wexford actually does anything, except be very cranky and kind of a dick. This story nearly put me to sleep. Ruth Rendell has a great reputation so I'm hoping they get more interesting as they go along.

Didnt see the twist at the end which is always a plus for a mystery book. Wish there had been more of Inspector Wexford and less of the Rev. Archery. The author's psychological explainations are somewhat heavy handed, just like in her other books I've read. Still, I'll read the next in the series.

Would give this a 4.5 really. About as perfect as this type of crime book can possibly get. Ruth Rendell is always brilliant at the characterisation and in this she really excels.Characters are great, the plot is tight and closely worked. Really great read.
