Waterstones' Thriller of the Month for October 2018

When this one came out, in hardback, it was already a big thing so when it finally came out in paperback and was the book of the month for October I knew I was going to be reading it very quick.

The premise for this book is quite simple, once you get it: you are in a mansion, where a party is taking place, and cannot get out unless you solve a murder. Every day, you will wake up in a different body, and live the same day, the day when the murder takes place, so you’ll have seven different points of view. At night of the 8th day, you’ll have to name who did it.
But nothing is a simple as that.

I do have to say I found the idea of the book fascinating and really compelling. I did not need much convincing to read the book. It is structured per days, so you discover what is going on a the same time that the protagonist does. I enjoyed a lot the writing style, it’s very fluent and engaging with the reader so, although it’s quite a long book, it does not get boring as there is always something happening. There’s a lot of action and tables are turning in every chapter. It compels you to keep reading, you need to know more because the more you discover, the more questions rise. It is delightfully plotted and in the end, everything makes so much sense.

The characters are very well defined. With so many different point of views, days, and personas, I think it might have been challenging for the author to define each one of them. There are so well defined and brilliantly written that, if you pay attention to details, you’ll be able to spot who they really are.

This is probably one of the most original books I have read in a while. And although it’s categorised as thriller, I think it will also fit in the world of science fiction.

The only downside for me was at the end. There was too much climax together and too many plot twists one after the other, so there was a point where I was a bit tired of conclusion after conclusion. It was a bit elongated and it kind of losses the momentum by having so many surprises at the end, as it does not give you enough time to process one when it’s already jumped to the next one. It gets a bit frantic, without enough time to assimilate it. But, besides that, a great read.

Probably, the best thriller I've read this year. And I've read quite a few.

This mixture of Agatha Christie kind of elements, a bit of magic/science fiction or suspension of disbelief, and an amazing character development has done wonders to this book. There was a lot of hype around it, but it has not disappointed me in the least. Although I do have to confess I'm not a big thriller reader, but hey, for me it has done the trick.

On the other hand, I'm absolutely sure this one will gain so much in a re-read.

I was surprised at how much i enjoyed the book in the end.  From the reviews I knew it was confusing but I somehow managed to have an idea of what was going on.  I listened to the audiobook and in the beginning the narrator irritated me but in the end I was grateful for the narrator because of the different accents he did it helped me remember who was who.
There were parts that were a bit drawn out but otherwise I very well thought out book and well written

I found this book extremely disturbing but also deeply fascinating. I could not put it down despite how creepy it left me feeling.
Honestly, the best part though was that the end raised questions of who we are. How much of our actions are constructed by us? How much can a person change? It’s a fascinating question.
