I began reading the book and almost dropped it. I was introduced to fourteen characters and I cared for none of them. Nor did I care for the way they were portrayed. Even after finishing, I am iffy about if I liked how the characters were written. At first, I was thrown off by how it was narrated. It felt like the author was trying to sprinkle exposition in for these characters when I couldn't care less about. Later, this same narrative tool became more effective as it focused in on the remaining characters, not all 14. Some characters you were clearly supposed to feel for, but I could not given how little time they had to expand those feelings. I resented that the book kept telling me how I was supposed to feel about these characters, only to feel that way about them. Just a little. I liked it much better when it was smaller groups. I cared enough about them and I felt for them. It wasn't perfect, but I appreciate what it had to say and the way it chose to say it.

I read this in like two days, and stayed up way too late the first day (do NOT recommend, not with this creepy book).

I don't read thrillers or horror normally, but I heard good things about this book and author, as well as seeing it on a sapphic book rec list.

The relationship is very minor, very shared trauma bonding lol.

I liked all the characters despite how many there are. I have watched a lot of competition shows in my life, so it did have that vibe of a large group, and then seeing snapshot videos of each competitor's background so you sympathize with them. Personally I didn't have any trouble keeping track of everyone.

This book gave me serious anxiety haha. I feel like it delivered on that thriller aspect. I never felt like it was slow or that I could put it down. I really sped through this book because it was unputdownable.

The only issue I have is the ending because it felt wildly abrupt.

I had fun reading this but it just felt a little lacking for me. I really like my horror grotesque and descriptive and this just didn’t have it. I felt like some punches were pulled, and had it been longer I think it had solid bones for a really good story. It’s still great, and I think it would make a fun horror film.

from the very first chapter, I knew this would be a five star. I knew this book would not disappoint. And I was so right! Loved how the author depicted the nowdays 20-something, that (my) generation who struggles to fit in because this world was not made for them. The interactions between the generations is so accurate, ma'am I couldn't stop thinking about it. This book is so reflective of our society. I laughed with the characters and I feared with and for them too, and that's what I like in a book. That's also how you recognise a good book.
Kiersten White transport us in a reality not so far from ours, one in which we keep living in the exact same cycles, as she put it in the acknowledgement. Generations after generations we make the same mistakes. Will we wake up and say fck it, today we change?

I really liked this book! It’s a nice, short and perfect-for-Summer thriller. This is also my first Kiersten White book, which makes me even happier because I also have And I Darken & The Guinevere Deception on my shelf. The writing was a great mix of 3rd person narration combined with the characters’ inner thoughts. I initially thought that keeping track of the 14 contestants was going to be bothersome, but White does it in in a way where its clear she kept that in mind. I would’ve liked a little more of an ending, but given the dedication of this book, I think it was perfect. I can’t wait to read more by her!
