I could relate to this story. I was in high school when this happened. It brought back my memories of the tragedy and how people dealt with it.
emotional informative inspiring sad medium-paced

A sweet and poignant look at three middle school siblings at the time of the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster. The three are learning to define themselves and how they interact with the world. This is the sort of children's book that's enjoyable for everyone.

But, oh. As a mom I had a very hard time dealing with the neurotic mother who routinely forced her destructive ideas on her kids.

Great book about balancing family dynamics

This felt like literary fiction for middle graders. I found it pretty bleak, especially because it’s set up to revolve around the challenger disaster and one of the three protagonists is super invested in it. I did not enjoy reading a book where the parents’ behaviour was setting up the kids for attachment trauma - it’s obviously a real experience, but it felt so hopeless.

I had a really hard time with the characters in this book. I loved Bird, but everyone else was just awful. The writing was beautiful though and the setting was completely different than anything I have ever seen.

I’ve been a reading fool this weekend and We Dream of Space didn’t let me down. Historical Fiction book set in 1986 with the Challenger explosion. (How can the 80s be historical fiction?? I’m an 80s child.)

Three siblings, all in seventh grade, trying to figure out who they are in the midst of living with dysfunctional parents. #grades678
inspiring lighthearted

This is a well written book that was enjoyable to read. The author did well in creating three siblings that have some similarities but their differences are more apparent. The challenger accident doesn't appear until almost the end of the book. But the weeks leading up to the launch provide lots of interaction between the siblings and their respective friends. If dealing with a dysfunctional family is an issue for you then this book might not be the one for. The parents are clueless to what their behavior is doing and has done to the kids. They are minor characters but little hope can be garnered from how they fit into the storyline. I'd recommend this book to young readers 10 and older due to the tension in the family and at school.
