Ah to be a middle schooler. This story is very sweet, with characters that are ordinary yet lovely. Kelly writes with a simple style that her contains depth; I think reading this as a person who has finally healed from the horrors of middle school made it feel so genuine, authentic, and sweet.

I love that the girl didn't give up after her first atempt

When you list the components of this story, they don't seem like they meld. Middle school social angst about interpersonal relationships and identity. A story told from multiple perspectives. A dysfunctional family and three siblings who end up raising themselves in many ways. An enthusiastic science teacher and the Challenger tragedy. But the parts come together so well in a sensitive story of optimism.
