Just in time for Halloween! I'm always intrigued by short-short stories and whether it's possible to do much in just a couple pages. Some of these are better than others; some read as complete stories, while others would make great story beginnings or writing prompts. I'm also glad that some art was included.

My personal, genuinely creepy, whole-story-in-small-package favorite was "At the water's edge" by Ayelet Waldman. I can still see it in my head.

For readaloud to a classroom, try:

An easy gig, p. 17
Takowanda, p. 34
Wet sand, little teeth, p. 50
Pantoum, p. 73 (interesting poem form)
Skittering, p. 81
Final word, p. 87 (makes great use of the ability to play with timing in visual storytelling)
I'm not afraid, p. 106

They aren't kidding when they half minute. Some stories are a few sentences. Some stories are great! Lots of great authors too. Fun Halloween read!

Some of these horrors were really funny; some, after a moment of contemplation, made you go "oh, ewwww..."

Two word review: baby lasagna. Does horror get much better? Top notch authors crafting palm-sized nuggets of gooseflesh... For lovers of Barry Yourgrau, and things that go bump in the broad daylight (because they're zombies!). Only flaw: two too many stories about stuff under beds. Best teaser: a retelling of James' Turn of the Screw that begs you to go find a copy!

Scarier still: that readers might unwisely decide to read these authors' work elsewhere...

Some of these stories actually made my skin crawl, and left me feeling paranoid, despite it being a children's book. I really enjoyed it!

Some were scary, some were gross and a few gave me goosebumps.

while i do think that a small number of the stories included in the collection is able to create a great atmosphere, i don’t think their work alone can make up for the lack of suspence i found in all the others. still, it might be an interesting read for someone who loves horror, just to see an horror anthology for kids with a couple of great stories.
