Not super scary but enjoyed that they were so short.
If I was doing an individual appreciation some of there stories would be a 5 stars and others a 2 stars so I tried to go down the middle. I wouldn't call there stories exactly horror, they are more creepy than anything else though the target audience are children and I haven't been one for a - long - while so maybe children would find it a lot scarier than I did. That said, a couple of the stories gave me goosebumps...
The stories here play a lot on children's fears : fear of the dark, of what is under the bed, of strangers or strange situations, of haunted houses. I have to say my favorite story was the first one in the book Something You Ought to Know by Lemony Snicket, that is a little creepy gem and maybe starting with a bang like that gave me an anticipation that most stories couldn't match. Other stories that are worth mentioning because of how good they were : In Hiding by Kenneth Oppel, At the Water's Edge by Ayelet Waldman, Skittering by Tui T. Sutherland (that turn on its head one of my favorite thing... yes, I love spiders!), A Disturbing Limerick found and envisioned by Vladimir Radunsky (here because I found it so funny) and I'm Not Afraid by Dan Gutman. I am not saying too much about the stories because being so short (2-3 pages in my ipod so one paper page?) it would take away the fun for the readers if I did.
Some stories here are prose, others are poesy and there's even some cartoon. Really interesting read and I would think it's a good choice to prepare children's for Halloween... though I'm not sure reading a story about the monsters under the bed before sleeping would be such a good idea.

Short horror stories, some of which made me feel scared. This is not necessarily a hard thing.

Solid introduction to horror for children. Like any anthology some stories were better than others, a few were great, a few were confusing, a few made you wonder how they got in the book, buy most were middle of the road stories.
Once upon a time when I was just browsing idly, I stumbled upon the world’s shortest horror story by Fredric Brown:
"The last man on Earth sat alone in a room. There was a knock on the door”
And since then, I’m obsessed with bite-size horror stories. It’s amazing how you can express so much with so few words and trigger imagination. And this book is full of these hair-rising mini horror stories which gave me exactly what I was looking for. I enjoyed most of the stories, some of them felt a bit short but still I really liked the idea behind this collection. You’ll find some of the most famous and talented authors here including Margaret Atwood, Neil Gaiman and Michael Connelly. I do not know if I’m the one crazy one here but I kept the time while reading them and not one of them lasted more than 30 seconds as the end cover suggests : How scared can you get in only 30 seconds? . A satisfyingly creepy one-breath read for the halloween. Definitely recommended.

It's all the best names in children's and young adult fiction... lining up to show you why flash fiction isn't nearly as effective as everyone wants you to believe. Three stars for some genuinely creepy illustrations, the stories are on the 'meh' side of predictable twists and too little there to scare.

This was a fun collection of stories, with quite a range of authors! It takes some skill to scare people in 3 paragraphs without any other "background" to the story.
My favorite shorts were by Tom Genrich & Michele Perry, Arthur Slade, M.T. Anderson, Dean Lorey, Adele Griffin and Alice Kuipers. I've only ever heard of one of these authors, which is cool. I'll be looking up the others to see if I like their regular fiction as much as their flash fiction.
