Without the globetrotting glitz and glamour of his usual stories, Ben MacIntyre's delve into Colditz sometimes gets a little stale.

What carries it through are the incredible stories of defiance, endurance and innovation, as well as moments of tenderness that transcend class, nation or ideology.

From the 1944 section onwards, this book chronicles the fall of the Third Reich from a truly unique perspective and is impossible to put down.

Picked this up in an airport shop, put it down several times to finish other books. This took a little while to warm up but towards the end, I could not put this down. I will say, I feel some of the earlier chapters were a little longer, so it was hard to get to stopping points. So many stories of different people, put together pretty cohesively. I think it’s easy to forget the absolute atrocities of this time period, but critical to remember.
