When Peregrine Fisher, received a mysterious summons to Melbourne her life is flipped right on its axis. Her aunt is missing, she has inherited her house, her car and has the chance to earn her seat with Adventuresses' Club of the Antipodes. Full of murder, mystery and sleuthing ‘Just Murdered’ is packed with twists and turns you will never see coming!
This was such a solid start to the Ms Fisher's Modern Murder Mysteries and I cannot wait to see what Katherine Kovacic has in store for Peregrine next!

This was a well-constructed and enjoyable cozy murder mystery with a lot of interesting and likable characters. The story is pretty much populated by stock characters you find in most mysteries, but they are well-written and help to shape the environment that the main character, Peregrine Fisher, finds herself a part of after essentially inheriting much of the life her recently deceased Aunt Phryne Fisher left to Peregrine in her will.

The story has a constantly forward moving pace, and Peregrine is just clever enough to come across as feisty but never rude. A potential love interest is floated about in this book, but it’s not a romance story and the author seems intent to allow a slow burn as Peregrine and police Detective James Steed get to know and trust each other before any romantic entanglement is begun.

The conclusion was not obvious and the way the conclusion was slowly revealed worked very well. It wasn’t ground breaking, but the real fun of the story is spending time with Peregrine as she becomes a proper detective and develops the personal relationships that will carry over into future mysteries!

✨RATING: 3⭐️

✨REVIEW: Just a little slightly delayed! 🙃
Peregrine Fisher gets a mysterious letter and ends up having to investigate.  Overall, I enjoyed this book but it wasn’t my favorite.  It was fun following Peregrine in her search to solve murders and exploit the truth.  I personally thought it moved slow for me, but it may have also been the audiobook narrator? With such high reviews, I was sad to leave only a 3⭐️ review myself. But I have to stay true. I didn’t feel a huge shock/twist and that is where my ratings sky rocket. It keeps me interested.

Just Murdered by Katherine Kovacic is a masterly crafted mystery with the perfect amount of intrigue and deceit.

Will Peregrine figure out who killed Barbie Jones and get her Aunt's seat with the Adventuresses?

Peregrine Fisher
Our investigator is Peregrine, a twenty-something lady with an eclectic background and job references. What she lacks in stability, she has in spades as life experience. I like her tenacity and snark, although she does know when to back off and allow the other person to step away, too. This may be good for her morality. Peregrine has moxie and talent. It seems that some come from her lifestyle, and it's evident that some also come from her genes as she is a great deal like her Aunt Phyrne.

I was immediately drawn to Peregrine and her story. She is somewhat of a lost girl searching for her home. Imagine if she and her Aunt had met and joined forces. Melbourne would have been in such trouble. Where one is undeniably a force, the two together would have been unstoppable.

The Mystery

We have the death of a model staged on top of a wedding cake at a fashion show and later the death of an Adventuress. Many things are going on behind the scenes, some of which Peregrine must figure out from messages that her Aunt has left behind. Other things are pretty obvious once you see certain people in action. However, these murders don't seem connected to the previously mentioned items. Our investigator has her work set out for her. I guessed who the culprit was based solely on the way the author portrayed the individual and the things that Peregrine noticed. Motive didn't come until later when some other clues were presented.

Five Stars
I love this story. My rating for Just Murdered by Katherine Kovacic is five stars. I enjoyed everything about the book and recommend it to all you historical mystery readers.

Thank you for dropping by! I hope you enjoyed this review of Just Murdered by Katherine Kovacic.

Until the next time,

I have to confess at the beginning of this review that I am completely new to Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. I had no idea who any of the Adventuresses were, and the world had no appeal to me--I honestly read the description and the idea of a historical mystery in the 60s was appealing! However, I'm happy to say I was not disappointed and may now check out the full show at some point.

Peregrine Fisher is a modern girl of the 60s who is still trying to find her place in the world when she is summoned to the Adventuresses' Club, home of her late aunt, Phryne Fisher, the famous detective. Peregrine, eager to fill her aunt's famous shoes, immediately attempts to join the club and takes on a case for the Adventuresses when one of their own, designer Florence Astor, is accused of murdering one of her models. Peregrine, with help from Detective Steed and the Adventuresses, sets out to determine who would want to kill Barbie Jones, Blair's Department Store's top model. As Barbie's secrets come to light, however, it becomes clear that there were many motives behind her death. But danger is afoot, and Barbie may not be the only one who is murdered. When another body turns up in Blair's, Peregrine needs to use every skill in her arsenal to prove herself as a detective, posing as a shop girl in Blair's to sniff out the killer.

Just Murdered is a fun, fast-paced mystery with plenty of red herrings, surprising twists, and unexpected discoveries. It has a likable cast of characters, including the plucky Peregrine, a modern girl with enough grit to face down anyone, Detective Steed, the stuffy but loveable police detective, the Adventuresses, each with their own quirks, and more. I enjoyed the humor of the story as well as the dialogue between the characters--it was witty and fun. I also loved the setting--I could feel the 60s throughout the novel, especially in the descriptions of the clothing and style.

The biggest downside to this novel was that the characters, as likable as they were, were largely shallow. They were caricatures--the plucky feminist detective, the shy, straight-laced detective, the grumpy but soft on the inside matron, etc. Still, I enjoyed the mystery and didn't mind the characters, which are typical for a story like this. Still, characters with more of a back story could have fleshed this novel out a little more.

This is based on the first episode of Miss Fishers Modern Mysteries (which itself was based off of the Ms Fishers Murder Mysteries series), an Australian tv show. This book is basically just the script written out and embellished in a few places. If you’ve watched the show you can absolutely skip this one. If you haven’t, it’s a fun, quick read!

This was a really cute book and I love that it's a series, so there are more to look forward to. My favorite part of this book is that is all about badass women doing what they do! Taking names and getting stuff done and murders solved in spite of the police being a hindrance. I can't wait to see how the relationship between Pereigrene & Detective Steed develops. I also anxiously await the comeuppance of Inspector Sparrow. That's going to be sweet, sweet revenge for the Adventuresses!
