I quite enjoyed this book. I think I might like books about fame and the entertainment industry. There are a few books in this realm that I’ve liked, so this makes me think it might be a topic I’m truly interested in and want to seek out more of. As with pretty much every book, I really enjoyed the beginning more than everything else. At the start of this book I was really obsessed and thought it could potentially be a five star. However, as it progressed, the book didn’t get bad, I just felt myself less engaged and truly interested. I wasn’t itching to finish it and wanting to know what happens next, which I think is the sign of a book that I truly truly love. However, I wish we got to spend more time with the events at the end of the book. We got so many different perspectives hinting at and foreshadowing the fact that Nancy and Vera stories and very tragically. But when we finally get to that pivotal moment, we only spend a few pages in that direct timeline. Then we spend a few pages very quickly going over the decades of consequences after that. I would’ve loved to spend more time with Vera and possibly even Nancy to explore what this really meant for them and how it affected them.

Mixed feelings on this one. I like this author and have read other books by her, so I was looking forward to reading this one. I knew it would be different than other books by her, but I was still expecting that signature SMG wittiness. So maybe that’s on me. But this one was a pretty basic historical fiction imo.
Anyway. It’s a double historical fiction. One timeline is the timeline of Salome and her role in the beheading of John the Baptist. The other timeline is during the 1950s/60s during the making of the film about Salome.
I could really get into either timeline. I didn’t have a clear view of where it was going. The lack of true chapters also made it feel like it just ran on.
The worst part was that I was finally getting a bit more into it, and then it just kind of wrapped up and ended. Like my heart was seriously racing at one point. And then it just ends. And I couldn’t really bring myself to feel much as I never really connected with the characters.
SMG is a great writer. It’s why I’m giving a neutral 3 stars. This one just didn’t work for me as a whole.
