I wasn’t a fan of this book. The FMC was so unlikable it ruined the story for me.

I was oblivious to the racism and white saviorism/colonialism when I read and first rated this book. Elizabeth O’Roark did not have the cultural sensitivity to write about Somalia and Somali people and it’s disappointing that this hasn’t been addressed and corrected. All the thanks to @salamireads on Instagram for educating me, I highly recommend her post on this book (it’s from 12/19/2024).

would have been a 3.5 ⭐️ but the last 15% & the third act breakup kind of ruined the book for me, was super unrealistic & stupid imo

An easy and heart-warming romance, The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea is a fun read. Unfortunately, the ‘Devil’ himself really isn’t much of a devil at all. Maybe for a chapter. It’s clear from the off that Josh is just into Drew and that’s the reason for his standoffishness. He isn’t rude to anybody else. He’s just a guy.

Drew’s backstory is painful and deep, and seeing her take charge of her life throughout this book was really great. She was the backbone of this story, for sure, and deserves the world. I’d be inclined to call her manager the Devil here, but he wasn’t in Hawaii so I guess it doesn’t work.

I loved this book! This is my second Elizabeth O’Roarke book and I’m obsessed! I loved everything about this book and I it was difficult to pause this audiobook while listening! The characters, their chemistry and the plot had me hooked from the beginning! The female narrator, Samantha Brentmoor is one of my favorites and I loved her narration in this book!
